" To walk a trail after bushwhacking is to cross mental borders: The border between lost and found, not knowing and knowing, nonhuman and human, wild and tame, hard and easy, dangerous and safe, deciding and merely following. The mind goes limp, the body slackens. I will no longer need to watch each step, or judge if a chunk of moss will hold my weight or if a stretch of snow is too thin. When you are walking a trail, it is too easy for the mind to separate from the body as the body goes on autopilot. You can daydream, ruminate in the manner of Rousseau and Wordsworth, but something is lost. To walk a trail after bushwhacking is to dumb down. "
